Derived variables for Ethnicity and Immigration research

We have created syntax files in Stata and R to produce variables that researchers may find useful when analysing Understanding Society data to conduct research on ethnicity and immigration. The derived variables we have chosen to create are those that require combining information collected from multiple waves, and/or multiple sources. The syntax files provide a description of the variables being created and the source variables that are being used.

  • Region of birth and whether born in the UK or not, imputed
  • Current religion, religion brought up in, imputed and harmonised
  • Migration intentions and reasons to migrate
  • Main language spoken at home during childhood

If you have any questions about these syntax file, or would like to suggest improvements please let us know:

For Stata contact: Alita Nandi

For R contact: Tiago Nascimento

If you want to request syntax files for new derived variables, or provide syntax files that create new derived variables useful for ethnicity and immigration research please let Alita and Tiago know.
